How to Visit a Shrine

1. Bow once before passing through the torii gate.

2.At the purification fountain (temizuya), cleanse your hands and mouth.

1. Hold the ladle with your right hand and wash your left hand.

2. Switch hands and wash your right hand.

3. Pour water into your left hand and rinse your mouth (don’t touch the ladle directly to your mouth).

4. Wash your left hand again.

5. Rinse the handle of the ladle before putting it back.

3. How to Walk the Approach Path

1. Walk along the side of the approach path, as the center is considered the path of the gods.

4. Worship at the Main Hall

At the shrine, follow the “Two bows, two claps, one bow” ritual.

1. Bow deeply twice.

2. Clap your hands twice.

3. Make a silent prayer.

4. Bow deeply once more.

5. When leaving

1. When leaving, turn back toward the shrine and bow once again.
